Why is this important to me?

I'm very excited to let you know that I will be running in the 2010 Boston Marathon® as part of the Perkins School for the Blind Marathon Team.

My son Willie graduated from Perkins in 2008. As a residential student since 1999, Willie had an entire team of specialists in every discipline working with him. His academic program was complimented by participation in group activities such as sports, chorus, school plays, and horticultural projects. In addition to the services provided for Willie, Perkins provides similar instruction for over 200 residential and day students each with an individual plan.

Perkins' education and training programs develop the skills and confidence necessary for every individual to live, work and function as independently as possible within the community. Perkins creates an innovative environment of exploration and discovery which results in the development of new teaching methods and educational materials. Lastly, Perkins is committed to sharing its expertise with its professional colleagues at the national and international level.

It is out of gratitude for the staff of Perkins that I am running in the Boston Marathon as part of the Perkin's fundraising team. I'm proud to take on this challenge to raise money and awareness for Perkins and the School's many programs and services.
